Thanksgiving Story & Craft

I did something big this week. I read books for the first time in front of children, 10 of them! Then we all did a craft together. And it went great!

I had so much fun hosting my first Story & Craft event for some lovely kiddos in my local area. I’ve been talking about it for so long, I was nervous! I was excited too though and I couldn’t have done it without my lovely friend Kristen (thanks again, girl!).

We started out by reading The Thank You Dish. Grace and her mama are sharing a meal, along with all the reasons they are thankful for the meal. They’re probably not what you expect (i.e. alpacas)! This sweet story offers an approachable, child-friendly way to talk about the value of community and being thankful for the things we have.

Then it was time to stretch our legs with a little dancing! Have you ever done the Turkey Pokey? I can now say I have! Turn it on this Thanksgiving, I bet you’ll share some laughs with the kiddos.

For our second story, we read a favorite – Too Many Tomatoes. The kids really enjoyed this rhyming story from Eric Ode with its beautiful illustrations! It’s the book I’m reading in the photo up above, I got all giddy when they stood so close, knowing they were really interested. After reading all about sharing the overabundance of tomatoes and the tomato parade, it was craft time!

I have to thank Happy Home Fairy for this simple turkey craft idea. It was so easy and the kids had so much fun. Crafts are a HUGE win in my book when I already have everything I need at home. Go ahead, check your supplies, I bet you could make this today!

I had everything cut out, prepared and set on the table, ready to go because we all know the patience of little ones often runs short. And their turkeys turned out beautiful! My little lady wasn’t in her craftiest mood, so I helped her along, but I loved that this craft worked well for a mix of ages.

I’m a Dirty Dinosaur

I'm a Dirty Dinosaur

I’ll be completely honest with you, I didn’t see the allure of I’m a Dirty Dinosaur at first. Well, apparently Ava was just a little too young when we first read it because now she LOVES it! And of course, that means I love it too.

She smiles so big and dances side to side along with the sing-song words. I’m a Dirty Dinosaur has fun illustrations made from real mud and exciting action words in the story kids can even play out, like stomp, stomp, stomp!

This is now one of our favorite read-alouds that we own and it always comes down from the shelf when Ava’s wearing her dino PJs. We ended up reading it 3 times in a row last week!

We will probably have the follow-up book, I’m a Hungry Dinosaur, in our collection sooner than later.

Are you there little fox?

Are you there little fox?

This book never fails to put me in a good mood. It takes us on a journey to find little fox and I often find myself reading it in a silly voice. You think you’re going to see little fox on the next page, but no! Those ears are bat ears, that little tail was actually a squirrel!!!

We also offer an elephant and bunny version in this series. Why is fox my favorite? Because he ends up with mama at the end! (Elephant is with daddy and bunny is with his friends, in case you were wondering). We read this book quite often, both enjoying the moment of fun it offers. It’s one Ava likes to flip through more than once, I’m guessing she loves the bright colors.

All Better!

all better

This is one of UBAM’s most-loved books by children everywhere and I am so happy we finally added it to our home library!

The story is short and sweet – Dog hurt his foot, Sheep scratched her tummy and Bear sat on a splinter! What will make everything all better? Clean it, kiss it and put a bandage on it! Young readers delight in the five animal friends’ misadventures and are eager to help make things “all better” with the five reusable and repositionable stickers.

However, this book also offers so much more! It helps kids with matching colors and animals. Repetition: The sing-song words on each page are essentially the same, and your child will memorize them and be able to “read” the book on their own, or to their little brothers and sisters! The book is hands-on and interactive! Children can work on fine-motor skills, and have fun with the “stickers” over and over again (If the cling-on stickers lose their stickiness, just run them under cold water to be revived!).

All Better! also teaches children compassion and kindness. We offer Little Bear Needs Glasses as well, which teaches children about being helpful and coming later this year, Kisses, Cuddles, and Good Night.
